Schools, colleges and universities carry large energy bills across sizeable and often ageing estates, and those bills are committed a year in advance against a market that pays no attention to the academic calendar. A cold winter or a price movement lands on a budget fixed the previous spring, and the shortfall comes out of something else.

The constraint on doing something about it is rarely appetite. It is the delivery window. Work has to fit holiday periods, capital funding cycles and procurement rules, and where it cannot, it has to be safe to run around pupils and staff.

Our work across education estates covers solar PV, battery storage, heat pumps, insulation, ventilation and EV charging, planned to term dates from the outset rather than discovering the clash halfway through. On a multi-site estate the whole portfolio is surveyed first, then sequenced so the worst performing buildings and the longest available windows line up.
